Czech-Polish Gas Interconnector
The planned Czech-Polish Gas Interconnector (CPI) project consists of the construction of a pipeline (DN 1000, PN 73.5) that would interconnect the existing transmission systems of the Czech Republic and Poland.
The aim of the new bidirectional Czech-Polish pipeline project is to increase the transmission capacity, and to facilitate safe and reliable transmission of gas between the two countries. The construction of such transport corridor would not only strengthen the flexibility of natural gas transmission in Central and Eastern Europe, but also integrate gas markets in the region.
Another important aspect of the Czech-Polish Gas Interconnector would be reinforcing the security of natural gas supply to Moravian regions by boosting the exit capacity into the domestic zone and also increasing injectability and deliverability at underground gas storage facilities located in Central and Northern Moravia. In addition, the project is planned to be a major contribution to efforts to secure an environmentally sound source of energy for industrial production in the South Moravian, Moravian-Silesian, Olomouc and Zlín Regions.
The projected length of the pipeline in the territory of the Czech Republic is approximately 207 km. A final investment decision has not been taken. The Polish partner to the project is GAZ-SYSTEM, S.A.
EU Regulation No. 347/2013, the main purpose of which is to facilitate and accelerate the implementation of projects of strategic importance in the energy sector, has introduced, among other things, a new status for projects – Project of Common Interest (PCI). The PCI status can be awarded to projects that provide a significant contribution to creating the internal energy market, ensuring the security of supply, and building strategic priority corridors with a cross-border impact. The list of PCI projects is updated every two years. The CPI project was included on the list of PCI projects in 2013, in 2015 and in 2017. In 2020, the project was not awarded the PCI status. Additional information on Projects of Common Interest (PCI) is available on the European Commission's official website here, and on the PCI interactive map here.

During 2011-2012, the project underwent a standard environmental impact assessment in accordance with Act No. 100/2001 Coll., on Environmental Impact Assessment. The Czech Ministry of the Environment issued an EIA approval on February 13, 2012. In response to an amendment to Act No. 100/2001 Coll., on September 23, 2015 the Czech Ministry of the Environment issued a Binding Position on Verification of Conformity of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Project issued in accordance with Section 10(1) of Act No. 100/2001 Coll., on Environmental Impact Assessment and on Amendment to Certain Acts (the “Environmental Impact Assessment Act”), as in effect until March 31, 2015.
Additional information on the project can be found on the PCI interactive map here.
Preparation and consultation of the documentation necessary for the planning permit has been initiated in 2014.
In 2014, the project received a grant under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program in the amount of 50% of eligible costs of the two activities preparatory stage.
The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is one of the most important programs included in the EU financial framework for the years 2014-2020. The program consists of providing EU financial assistance to support Projects of Common Interest in transport, energy and telecommunications infrastructure, using the synergy potential between these sectors. In 2011, the European Commission decided to allocate funds under the European Union program for trans-European Energy Networks (TEN-E) to co-finance a project entitled "Study and Pre-Investment Work relating to the Use and Possibilities for Further Development of the Polish-Czech Interconnector". The project included the preparation of technical specifications for the planned route and documents for a land-use permit application for the pipeline, which is planned to provide a direct interconnection between the Czech and Polish transmission systems.
The European Union trans-European Energy Networks program (TEN-E) supported long-term investments into the energy sector. The objective of the program was to ensure the security and diversification of supply, and more importantly, the gradual interconnection, interoperability and development of trans-European Networks for the transmission of electricity and transport of gas.
In 2018, NET4GAS received a grant from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program in the amount of 50% of total eligible costs for design works for an upgrade of the Břeclav compressor station. The Feasibility study was elaborated within this action.

Due to changes in the Building Code it is necessary for four sections to pass through a joint permit process. The Application for joint permit for the first two sections was submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade on October 22, 2019. Negotiation with authorities and network operators concerned is ongoing for two remaining sections. The tender documentation for the procurement of materials and works was completed.
