Czech Hydrogen Backbone SOUTH
The Czech Hydrogen Backbone SOUTH project focuses on connecting hydrogen infrastructure in the Central and Eastern European region. The goal is to ensure the transportation of 100% hydrogen from two main supply regions outside the EU (notably Ukraine and North Africa) and also to supply the area along the corridor according to expected demand growth, especially in Germany. In the territory of the Czech Republic, this involves the modification of one of the pipelines of the southern branch between the Lanžhot and Waidhaus border points with a total length of 403 km.
The project is included in the first hydrogen List of Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest (PCI/PMI) adopted in 2023. The project is listed under number 10.4 - Generic corridor aiming to transmit hydrogen from Ukraine to Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, and Germany. The project was not nominated to the second PCI list due to the greater advantages and variability of the northern route. For more details, see also Czech Hydrogen Backbone NORTH.
